The ocean – 99 percent of the space inhabitable by organisms – is facing a “silent tipping point”: the UN High Seas Protection Agreement cannot save the oceans from overheating, oxygen loss, and acidification. Seven of nine planetary boundaries have been exceeded. By 2050, the Earth could warm by three degrees compared to pre-industrial temperatures. The climatic balance of the last ten thousand years or so, which made the development of human civilization possible, is being destroyed. Not least, a large proportion of the world's population already lacks the basic necessities for a dignified life.

However, big politics is preoccupied with conquering influence and zones of control. With land, resource, and ocean grabbing, with armament and market conquest. When it does come to the climate, the mother of the most pressing crises, there is debate that even inadequate measures are allegedly "too expensive".

Doing nothing is not an option. “Our task is to build a broad and deep movement that is as spiritual as it is political, and strong enough to stop these traitors who have lost their way”, writes Canadian journalist Naomi Klein. “A movement rooted in an unwavering commitment to each other, across our many differences and divisions, and to this wondrous, unique planet.” “We need a movement of movements built on outrage and optimism”, write the scientists at Earth4All. And doughnut economist Kate Raworth advises: “Network with equal-minded changemakers.” Japanese philosopher Kohei Saito also offers hope: “If we humans join forces shoulder to shoulder and in solidarity, we can still save our only home, planet Earth.”

There are bearers of hope: some conduct research with academic meticulousness, others skillfully replace the planks of an old ship or produce food in an environmentally friendly way. Others demonstrate, collect signatures, run a publishing house, or make music. Still others work in the international jungle of diplomacy...
